Five core interview tips

Five core interview tips

Many people are unnecessarily overwhelmed at the prospect of attending an interview when basically it is just a “chat between two parties”.

Detailed preparation is the key to performing well at an interview, however, there are five core areas to build your approach around.

    1. Be precise

Do not prattle on when asked a question. Keep to the point and refrain from bringing side issues into the conversation (you never know where that can lead)

2. Research the company and the interviewer

Simple…do a Google search and use LinkedIn to learn about the company and the interviewer. You may find common interests, connections and an understanding of the organisation’s business that you can weave into the conversation

    3. Do not sound scripted

Although you will have prepared and practised examples of your past performances, always answer the question in an interesting tone. Don’t repeat your preparation verbatim, deliver it in an informative and relevant manner

    4. Prepare six examples that you can use

By preparing a set of six examples that you can draw on to validate and match your background to the job specifications you should have enough information to respond professionally to most questions

    5. Send a follow-up letter the same day after the interview

As soon as you return home after an interview send your follow-up letter immediately confirming your interest in the position and why you are the ideal candidate

Presentation is everything at an interview and post-interview!

Research shows that most interviewers make their mind-up in the first two minutes of an applicant entering the room.  Therefore, pay close attention to your body language and personal impression.
